The 5 Ts of Mosquito Control

Mosquitoes are a nuisance! Their bites itch, and often raise welts on your skin. They carry diseases like West Nile Virus and Zika Virus, and they can keep you indoors instead of outside enjoying your yard. Here are a few simple steps to reduce the mosquitoes around your Central Texas home. Just remember: Tip, Toss, Turn, Tarp, Treat.

Tip

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so make sure that water isn’t collecting in items in your yard like sandboxes, plant saucers and toys. Just tip them over every few days and the mosquito eggs and larvae in the water will never develop into adults. It’s okay to have bird baths and pet water dishes full of water, just don’t let them sit for more than two days without tipping them out and refilling them.

Toss

Yard waste like dead leaves and grass clippings can be wet enough to allow mosquitoes eggs to develop, and it can also shield larger items that hold water. Properly dispose of your yard waste to eliminate another mosquito habitat.

Turn

If you have something that’s going to be out in the yard for a while that has the potential to collect water, turn it over so that this doesn’t happen. Wheelbarrows, kiddie pools and recycling bins can all be stored upside down so that they don’t gather water. It only takes a few days of water pooling in an area for it to go stagnant, which will result in an increase in mosquitoes around your yard.

Remove Tarps

Tarps and grill covers that aren’t tightly fitted form pockets where water collects when it rains. Check tarps around your yard and either make sure they are stretched tightly and not holding water, or dry them, fold them up and put them away. All tarps sag over time, so check them regularly.

Treat

Hiring a professional to perform a barrier treatment around your yard will vastly reduce the numbers of mosquitoes that bother you. This type of treatment reduces the need to spray your skin with mosquito spray, and it works on a time-released schedule, so it is effective for a long time.
